More than 1,300 large U.S. electricity users, including 78 Fortune 500 companies, belong to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership. Partners pledge to use, at a minimum, green power for a specified percentage of their electricity use. For members using the most electricity, program requirements mean that at least 3 million kWh of the electricity that they use each year be green power. New England takes a bite out of Food Waste

Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut all have laws limiting the amount of food that producers, stores, and food providers can to send to landfills. Instead of throwing away excess food, businesses and institutions must donate it to organizations that will use it to help feed the needy. DNA terrorist-ID-methods used to identify littering culprits and raise public awareness

Science developed to help the U.S. Department of Defense identify terrorists was employed to identify Hong Kong litterbugs. Hong Kong Cleanup (HKC), an environmental NGO, recently used proprietary DNA phenotyping techniques, available for purchase by credit card, in an effective anti-littering awareness program. Indy’s EV fleet to go from 195 to 425 cars

What may be the world’s largest municipal electric vehicle (EV) fleet is about to become even larger.  One hundred ninety five plug-in electric cars have already been put into service over the past year in the Indianapolis, Indiana government motor vehicle fleet. Those cars replaced gasoline powered ones that averaged only 16.6 miles per gallon. According to a report prepared by Vision Fleet (VF), the company that leases and maintains the electric vehicles, the EV’s will not only reduce emissions, but also total lifetime vehicle costs to the city. California air pollutants decreased 35 to 47 percent. So did childhood lung problems.

Southern California’s air quality improved from the mid 90s to 2010 and during that period so did the lungs of the region’s children. The four-year average of NO2 and PM2.5 air pollution in five Southern California cities decreased 35 percent and 47 percent respectively from 1994 to 2010. During the corresponding period, the percentage of 11 to 15 year olds living in those cities that had worse than normal lung function also decreased significantly.
